Antwerp was under siege by the German Army from the night of 27/28 September 1914. After the Belgian Army and most of the British supporting force withdrew the city capitulated on 9/10 October 1914.

Nieuwpoort

Nieuwpoort was a fishing town and seaside resort at the time of the outbreak of the First World War. Located at the mouth of the Yser (IJzer) River the Ganzepoot (Goose Foot) lock complex regulated the flow between the North Sea and six waterways on the polders of the Flanders plain. The deliberate opening of the sluice gates in October 1914 resulted in the flooding of the Flanders plain south and east of Nieuwpoort. The town was badly damaged by German artillery during the war.

Following the withdrawal of Belgian forces from the besieged city of Antwerp the Belgian government was transferred to Ostend on 7 October 1914. The port was, however, evacuated by Belgian forces on 12 October 1914. German forces occupied the town from 15 October 1914. Ostend was reoccupied by Allied forces on 17 October 1918
